New Bio-based Alloy Plexiglas® Rnew Resin with NatureWorks’ Ingeo™ biopolymer offers exceptional performance characteristics

- Press release

Altuglas International’s, a subsidiary of Arkema, new Plexiglas® Rnew bio-based resins, compounded alloys of Altuglas International’s PMMA and NatureWorks LLC’s IngeoTM biopolymer, will be presented at the National Plastics Exposition (NPE) April 2-5, 2012, in Orlando, FL.

The new bio-based alloys offer exceptional performance characteristics and are designed to be an excellent choice for brands looking for lower carbon footprint solutions. The unique properties of the new Plexiglas® Rnew compounds stem from the synergistic effect of compounding two completely miscible polymers, Plexiglas® and Ingeo biopolymer. The resultant Plexiglas® Rnew alloys feature lower processing temperatures, greater melt flow properties, and reduced carbon footprint.  Altuglas International can tailor properties of these alloys, such as impact and chemical resistance, to meet some of the most demanding application conditions. The Plexiglas® Rnew alloys do so without compromising the optics, scratch resistance, color acceptance, and surface aesthetics for which the Plexiglas® and Altuglas® brands are known.

To learn more about Plexiglas® Rnew bio-based alloys visit the NatureWorks booth #57048 and Altuglas International’s Casino Night at NPE at the Orange County Convention Center on April 3, 2012, 5:30 pm – 8:00pm, North Building, 2nd floor, rooms 210 D&E. “What makes this product so exciting is that the new resins will provide a viable alternative for brands looking for a transparent bio-based material for durable applications while the end-user will benefit from purchasing goods with a lower carbon footprint and thus contributing to the use of renewable resources in plastic goods,” said Antonis Papadourakis, Altuglas International Regional Group President, Americas.

“The Plexiglas® Rnew bio-based family of products offers an excellent alternative for chemical resistance to alcohol, oils and lipids, cleaners and antiseptics or even acid and basic solutions,” explains Carmen Rodriguez, Altuglas International business manager.

“Plexiglas® Rnew alloy provides impact resistance far superior to any acrylic resin in the marketplace today, offering impact comparable with that of polycarbonates or copolyesters.” She adds, “These compounded resins deliver elevated performance, which first generation bio-based alloys have been unable to achieve. Ingeo™ biopolymer, which uniquely interacts with Plexiglas® acrylic resins, makes the resultant compound more durable and easily tailored to meet even the most exacting needs.”

About Altuglas International, a subsidiary of Arkema
Altuglas International, integrated world leader in PMMA, is highly involved in the technical plastics sector – from MMA monomer to PMMA acrylic glass. Altuglas International develops and produces new products to suit the needs of its customers worldwide. It employs 1,300 wholly dedicated staff, who contributes daily to the three business sectors (MMA, PMMA resins, and PMMA sheets). www.altuglasint.com

Plexiglas® and Altuglas® are registered trademarks of Arkema in the Americas and other continents, respectively. To enable its customer to identify products derived wholly or in part from renewable raw materials (over 20% carbon of non-fossil origin), Arkema has devised the “Arkema Rnew” label. The evaluation of products’ renewable carbon content is carried out internally based on the ASTM D6866 standard.

About NatureWorks
NatureWorks LLC is a company dedicated to meeting the world’s needs today without compromising the earth’s ability to meet the needs of tomorrow. NatureWorks LLC is the first company to offer a family of commercially available, low-carbon-footprint IngeoTM biopolymers derived from 100 percent annually renewable resources with performance and economics that compete with oil-based plastics and fibers. In October 2011, Thailand’s largest chemical producer, PTT Global Chemicals, entered into an agreement to make a $150 million equity investment in NatureWorks. The transaction remains subject to regulatory clearances. For more information on NatureWorks and IngeoTM, visit www.natureworksllc.com.
