Rilsan® HT: the first flexible, high-temperature thermoplastic to replace metal in engine-compartment tubing

- Press release

Arkema’s Rilsan® HT is the first polyphtalamide (PPA)-based material to replace metal in tubing for high-temperature automotive applications. The revolutionary flexibility of Rilsan® HT resin offers a step-change in PPA-based materials, creating opportunities to replace metal that were previously unthinkable. Compared with metal assemblies, tubing assemblies made from Rilsan® HT lower the overall system cost and ensure longer service life of engine components.  Rilsan® HT contains up to 70% renewable carbon, which fits into the eco-design concepts of many vehicle manufacturers.

For years, PPA-based injection resins have been increasingly used in place of metal in automotive applications as a way to optimize costs, reduce emissions and weight, improve fuel economy and extend car life.  However, the inherent brittleness of polyphtalamides has limited their use to injection-molded parts.  Up to now, replacing metal tubing with PPA-based polymers had been impossible.

Rilsan® HT surpasses the limits of other PPA resins
To fill this gap, Arkema has developed a completely new PPA-based high-temperature material, Rilsan® HT. Now, this first flexible PPA extends metal substitution to yet unimagined possibilities for automotive powertrain and other under-the-hood components. Based largely on long-chain chemistry, Rilsan® HT possesses a flexibility previously unknown in this material group. Rilsan® HT is the only PPA-based extrusion resin that can replace metal in tubing for severe engine-compartment service and other demanding industrial applications.Extraordinary flexibility gives Rilsan® HT excellent thermoformability and fitting-insertion properties.  Easily extruded to form either smooth or convoluted tubing, Rilsan® HT offers unprecedented freedom of design -- further adding to the metal-substitution opportunities.

This new PPA-based resin surpasses other high-temperature thermoplastics with superior long-term resistance to thermo-oxidative and chemical aging at high temperatures. Unlike other PPA-based resins, Rilsan® HT features very low moisture uptake resulting in exceptional dimensional stability and low tendency to creep.

Rilsan® HT offers cost-efficient manufacturing
Rilsan® HT tubing assemblies are more cost effective in series production and have lower overall system costs than metal tubing assemblies. With processing characteristics similar to those of high-performance aliphatic polyamides, Rilsan® HT can be economically processed on standard extrusion equipment, easily thermoformed and assembled. This means that Rilsan® HT offers the same excellent fitting-insertion properties, reliability, durability and safety as Rilsan® PA12 and PA11. High design flexibility, whether through thermoforming or smooth and corrugated tubing process technologies, further adds to the cost-efficiency compared to classical metal processing. In addition, corrosion-free lightweight tubing of Rilsan® HT contributes to increased life expectancy and reliability of engine components, as well as to reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Rilsan® HT allows you to benefit from renewable materials
The impressive performance of Rilsan® HT is further enhanced by environmental benefits. Rilsan® HT is a durable high-temperature thermoplastic derived largely from renewable non-food-crop vegetable feedstock, thus offering a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional petroleum-based high-temperature plastics and a reduced dependence on oil resources. Rilsan® HT resin features a renewable carbon content up to 70%, enabling the automotive industry to profit from an environmentally improved product lifecycle.
